Lionel Messi returned to professional football just four days after his father, Jorge Messi, passed away, making an emotional appearance for Inter Miami in their Leagues Cup match against Club León. The 39-year-old soccer star's return was a surprise, as he had recently traveled to his hometown of Rosario for his father's funeral, which took place on August 8 due to the elder Messi's prolonged illness. Jorge Messi, who had been a central figure in his son's career as his agent and business manager, died at the age of 68.

Messi was brought on as a substitute in the second half of the game at Miami's Nu Stadium, where he received a warm welcome from the fans. His emotional return came after he had expressed uncertainty about his future in football in a tribute to his late father, stating, "I don't know what I'm going to do without you. I don't know how to carry on. I only played football, and now I have quite a few doubts about whether I'm going to keep doing it for much longer."

Inter Miami's hopes of advancing in the tournament were dashed as Club León overcame a first-half deficit to win 3-2 and secure their place in the knockout stage. Daniel Arcila scored twice for León, including the decisive goal in the 83rd minute, while Yannick Bright netted Inter Miami's second goal. Despite Messi's return, Inter Miami could not overcome Club León's second-half resurgence.
