Merdeka should not end when the flag comes down — Muhammad Noor Abdul Aziz and Nurahimah Mohd Yusoff

Every August, Malaysian schools transform into vibrant arenas of patriotism. Decorations, performances, and speeches about unity fill the air. Yet, one crucial question lingers: what becomes of Merdeka after the celebrations conclude? If patriotism is only taught through annual rituals, children may master the words of Rukun Negara but struggle to embody its values in daily life. To address this, Merdeka should transition from the calendar to the curriculum, and then into the hearts of young Malaysians.

Schools can achieve this by turning Merdeka activities into genuine, hands-on experiences. Students could explore local histories of independence, interview elders about Malaysia's evolution, document community narratives, or devise solutions to pressing issues like racism, environmental stewardship, and digital misinformation. Subjects such as History, Bahasa Melayu, Moral Education, Arts, and even Science can become platforms for students to delve into what it means to be Malaysian in today's world.

The authors, Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Noor Abdul Aziz and Prof Dr Nurahimah Mohd Yusoff from Universiti Utara Malaysia, advocate that schools should integrate Merdeka into the academic year, transforming it into a practice rather than a fleeting celebration. Schools should introduce "Merdeka in Action" initiatives throughout the year.

Students might demonstrate inclusion by befriending classmates of diverse backgrounds, showcase civic responsibility through community service projects, or resolve conflicts using principles of respect and justice. Teachers can guide students in reflecting on how these actions embody the spirit of Merdeka.

Ultimately, the true success of a Merdeka celebration lies not in the number of flags displayed or songs sung, but in how a child lives these values months later. Let us instill in children the practice of Merdeka in their lives, ensuring that the spirit of independence, unity, and responsibility permeates their daily choices and actions.
