Many left homeless after fire breaks out in Kangemi

A fire erupted in residential buildings near Posta in Kangemi, Nairobi, on Thursday afternoon, leaving many residents homeless. Police reported that firefighters were struggling to control the blaze, which began around midday. There were no casualties, but authorities confirmed that numerous people were displaced by the incident.

Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, working tirelessly to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to neighboring structures. The origin of the fire remained unclear, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

Kangemi Informal Settlement, where the fire occurred, is one of Nairobi’s most densely populated urban areas, situated in a valley surrounded by affluent residential neighborhoods like Mountain View. The settlement is notorious for its overcrowded semi-permanent structures, primarily made of corrugated iron sheets (mabati) and supported by wooden frames or mud walls. Such constructions are particularly susceptible to rapid fire spread, especially when buildings are separated by narrow pathways.

The settlement is home to thousands of low-income residents, most of whom rent individual rooms within privately-owned compounds. This high density, coupled with limited access routes, poses significant challenges for emergency response teams, potentially delaying the arrival of fire engines and other critical vehicles. As residents gathered around the affected area, firefighters labored to extinguish the fire and prevent it from engulfing more homes.
