Manvinder Bisla, a former Kolkata Knight Riders player, commented on Rahul's Test cricket performance, stating that while the young cricketer possesses immense talent, he has not yet been able to consistently convert that talent into runs. Bisla felt that Rahul tends to stay in the shadow of the established senior batters, such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma.

Bisla expressed his belief that it is the perfect time for Rahul to break free from the shadow and shine in Test cricket. He cited examples of Pujara's outstanding series in Australia and Virat Kohli's dominant performance overseas, where Kohli not only handled tough conditions but also shone brightly in Australia. Bisla also mentioned Virender Sehwag's exceptional batting in Sri Lanka in 2010 when Mendis was dominating.

Bisla concluded that Rahul's current opportunity to step up and dominate Test cricket is crucial, as the young batters in the batting order rely on a veteran who can bail the team out of trouble. The last English tour provides a glimmer of hope that Rahul is ready to rise to the occasion. Rahul himself admitted that he is not concerned about his average, stating that while he does notice it, his focus is more on executing game plans tightly and enjoying the game.
