Mangione lawyers to meet federal prosecutors amid reports of plea deal

Attorneys representing Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York, are set to meet with federal prosecutors on Friday. Reports indicate that a potential plea agreement may be under discussion. Mangione faces two federal stalking charges that could result in life in prison without parole.

However, it is unclear which specific charges are being considered for a possible plea deal. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald confirmed that a conference will take place on Friday at 11 am, but no further details have been provided. Mangione is also currently facing a separate state trial for the same incident. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges in both state and federal proceedings.

While a plea deal does not guarantee its execution, it must still receive court approval. If a deal is reached, it must be approved by a judge. Federal authorities accused Mangione of traveling and using surveillance techniques to carry out the alleged murder. Two other charges against him were dismissed by a federal judge in January, one of which carried the possibility of the death penalty.

Mangione's legal team argued that he should not be subjected to dual prosecutions in both state and federal courts. Currently, both trials are proceeding as scheduled, but if Mangione were to plead guilty in the federal case, his attorneys might argue that the state case violates double jeopardy - a constitutional safeguard against being prosecuted twice for the same crime.

The state constitution also includes its own prohibition on double jeopardy, which, if invoked, could impact Mangione's upcoming state trial. Mitchell Epner, a white-collar attorney and former federal prosecutor, explained that once a federal prosecution concludes on a matter, the state cannot proceed with a trial on the same facts.

Mangione's state trial is set to commence on September 8th, while the federal trial is slated for January 2027.
