President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaian youth to transition from being mere consumers of technology to becoming creators and innovators in the digital transformation of the nation. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, digital commerce, and automation have been identified as avenues for job creation and sustainable livelihoods. The 2026 National Youth Conference, held at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, drew together government officials, traditional and religious leaders, academia, development partners, and youth to discuss these opportunities.
The conference, organized by the National Youth Authority and the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, focused on rebuilding values, inspiring patriotism, and empowering the youth in the digital age. Opare-Addo stressed that technology is already reshaping economies and urged young people to use it productively. He highlighted opportunities in digital commerce, remote work, and the creator economy, noting that some Ghanaians are already earning foreign currency by working remotely for international firms.
He emphasized that talent must be complemented by strong values such as integrity, discipline, honesty, respect, and responsibility, warning that a tarnished reputation can be more damaging than financial losses. Social media influencers were cautioned against abusing their platforms without responsibility. Patriotism, according to Opare-Addo, transcends merely singing the national anthem; it involves acting as responsible citizens by protecting public property, paying taxes, maintaining a clean environment, and refusing to engage in dishonest practices.
He challenged youths to address problems in Ghana actively rather than merely complaining. The National Apprenticeship Programme, targeting young people unable to enter tertiary education, is being aligned to regional economic needs. A new Domestic Care Economy programme is set to be introduced next year to create sustainable jobs.
The government is also working with the private sector to transition national service personnel into permanent employment. The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, urged the youth to position themselves for jobs from the government's 24-hour economy initiative. He highlighted projects such as pharmacies, clinics, schools, banks, and stores being established in hubs across Ashanti, with similar initiatives planned nationwide.
He also noted the potential in the security services but cautioned that challenges such as inadequate offices and accommodation must be addressed.
