During an interview with the Handelsblatt at the DLD conference in Munich, Russell explained his shift in perspective, why he believes current regulations are misguided, and his assessment of the risk of AI systems going out of control. When asked about the moment he transitioned from an optimist to a 'skeptic,' Russell clarified that he does not consider himself a skeptic, but rather acknowledges the potential for AI to become so powerful that it could pose a threat, unless developed responsibly.

Emphasizing the importance of proper regulation, Russell drew a parallel to nuclear energy, stating that those who ensure reactors do not explode are not skeptics, but rather responsible individuals.
