Japanese airlines set to cut fuel surcharges for international flights in September and October

Japan's international travelers can look forward to cheaper flights in September and October as major airlines ANA and JAL are set to reduce fuel surcharges. This comes after the Japanese yen hit historically low levels, making Japan a more affordable destination for tourists worldwide. ANA and JAL typically adjust their fuel surcharges every two months, and the latest revision follows months of extremely high fees.

These surcharges, added to international airfares to cover fuel price fluctuations, can significantly impact ticket prices. In July and August, fuel surcharges for ANA and JAL flights to various international destinations reached record highs of 65,000 yen (US$433), up from 56,000 yen in May and June. The surcharges are largely due to increased aviation fuel prices following unrest in the Middle East.

However, the Japanese government's emergency subsidy for aviation fuel, introduced in response to these events, has helped lower costs. JAL has not yet released its official list of fuel surcharges for tickets issued from September through October, but they are expected to align with ANA's new rates. ANA's surcharge for travelers between Japan and Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Oceania will decrease from 65,000 yen to 55,000 yen per person each way, saving passengers 10,000 yen each way or 20,000 yen on a return trip.

Similarly, surcharges for flights to Hawaii, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, South Korea, and China will also decrease. These new rates represent the cheapest ANA and JAL fuel surcharges have been since May 1. Travelers planning to book flights to Japan may want to wait until September 1, when the new fuel surcharges take effect for tickets purchased between September 1 and October 31.
