International falcon breeding auction highlights unique species and hybrids

The 2026 International Falcon Breeding Farms Auction, held in Malham, north of Riyadh, showcased a diverse array of falcon species and hybrids. The event, organized by the National Center for Falcons, featured various breeds such as gyrfalcons, peregrines, sakers, and hybrids, each distinguished by unique attributes including size, color, build, and performance.

Samer Dhiab Al-Sulaimi, a representative from a local farm, explained that gyrfalcons are characterized by their large size, robust build, and a spectrum of colors ranging from white to grey and darker tones. Breeding farms cultivate different lines of gyrfalcons, each tailored to specific desired traits. Similarly, Al-Sulaimi highlighted that peregrines are prized for their incredible speed, sleek bodies, and pointed wings, making them highly sought-after by falconers for their exceptional flight and hunting capabilities.

Sakers were noted for their remarkable strength and their deep-rooted connection to falconry and hunting customs in the region. Al-Sulaimi emphasized that the farms do not solely produce purebred falcons but also hybrids that blend traits from various species. Popular hybrids at the auction included the gyr-peregrine and the mathlouth al-gyr—a specific triple hybrid involving gyrfalcons—among others.

Breeding farms selectively choose breeding lines to achieve specific attributes such as speed, size, color, or performance. The auction provided an unparalleled opportunity for falconers and enthusiasts to observe a wide range of falcon species and categories under one roof, while also gaining insights into the practices of local and international breeding farms in selecting bloodlines and developing breeding programs.
