Inside L&T Vyoma’s Plan To Build India’s AI Infrastructure Giant

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is consolidating its data centre, cloud and AI infrastructure businesses under a new subsidiary, Vyoma.AI, to build a stronger presence in India's rapidly growing AI infrastructure market. L&T has transferred its data centre and cloud services to Vyoma for ₹1,400 Cr, and Vyoma's AI infrastructure subsidiary, LTN Compute, has secured an order from US-based AI cloud platform Together AI.

The order is for deploying an AI factory at L&T's Chennai data centre, which will house 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs. This development aligns with L&T's ambition to expand its scale in AI infrastructure, going beyond conventional data centre operations to a full-stack digital infrastructure business encompassing colocation, cloud and AI factories.

Vyoma's CEO, Prashant Chiranjive Jain, explained that the company's strategy is to build out this infrastructure stack as the demand for compute, power, and connectivity surges. While initially focusing on colocation infrastructure, L&T soon realized the need to move up the AI value chain by adding public, private and sovereign cloud services.

Vyoma now offers colocation, cloud, and AI factory services, with a focus on building a sovereign AI infrastructure stack to provide enterprises with a secure environment for deploying CPU and GPU compute without moving sensitive data to public AI platforms. The company has already begun converting L&T's existing Chennai facility, a 30 MW data centre, into an 'AI mega factory'.

Around 24 MW of this 30 MW facility will be dedicated to AI workloads, and the company expects the NVIDIA B300-powered AI factory to go live by November 2023. L&T plans to deploy next-generation AI platforms, such as Vera Rubin and Blackwell, in subsequent facilities. The planned infrastructure is significant, with Jain estimating the current NVIDIA-linked AI factory to represent about 23 MW of AI infrastructure, with a capex investment of ₹10,000-12,000 Cr planned for the current setup and expansion.

L&T is also expanding its presence beyond Chennai, evaluating two potential data centre campuses in Mahape, Maharashtra, with a combined capacity of around 100 MW.
