Inside Illinois’s $30M Busey Bank Deal: Exec Road Trips, Player Job Pipeline

In July, the University of Illinois signed a $30 million sponsorship deal with Busey Bank, taking advantage of the NCAA's new jersey patch rule. This agreement is part of a larger $30 million sponsorship deal between the parties, according to a copy of the contract obtained by Front Office Sports. The 23-page agreement reveals how schools may be structuring their deals, particularly those acquired through multimedia rightsholder Learfield.

The agreement includes transparency that other institutions have not provided. The five-year sponsorship runs from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2031. Busey Bank will pay Illinois $5 million annually and provide a one-time $5 million signing bonus. The contract outlines several categories of sponsorship assets, including jersey patches.

For football and men's and women's basketball, the patch appears on the front of sideline apparel and uniforms for players and head coaches, and on the clothing of offensive and defensive coordinators for football, as well as assistant coaches in men's and women's basketball. The same applies to players and the head coach for soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball.

For men's and women's golf, patches will be on the front or sleeves of polo shirts for players and the head coach. The contract includes multiple exclusivity mentions, preventing Illinois from engaging in sponsorship activities with companies considered competitors of Busey Bank. The bank will serve as the "official financial services partner" of the Fighting Illini, receiving various in-stadium, in-arena, radio, audio, and digital advertising assets.

Busey Bank executives or guests will receive road trips for Big Ten conference road games each year, and players will receive NIL opportunities and job pipeline placements. The agreement does not mention specific NIL compensation.
