India withdraw from ASEAN Cup to prioritise Brazil; plan friendlies vs WC teams

India have chosen to withdraw from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup in order to focus on their high-profile friendly match against Brazil, which will take place in Kolkata on October 3rd. This decision was made due to a scheduling conflict that made it impossible for India to participate in both tournaments simultaneously. The AIFF, India's football governing body, informed FIFA of their withdrawal and is now looking for alternative fixtures to compensate for the loss of matches.

The final of the ASEAN Cup is scheduled for October 4th, while the India vs. Brazil friendly is on October 3rd. AIFF general secretary M Satyanarayan revealed that the federation had considered sending separate squads to both competitions, but this option was ultimately dismissed due to technical reasons. FIFA's participation agreement stipulates that teams competing in its tournaments must field their full-strength squads, which precluded the possibility of fielding two separate teams.

Choosing the Brazil fixture over the ASEAN Cup finals would have meant forfeiting the latter, leading to potential sanctions from FIFA.

Satyanarayan emphasized that the Brazil match presents a significant opportunity for India, as they will face top-tier opponents like Singapore. The country's fifth-ranked team, ranked 138th in the world, will be playing against a team ranked 138th, a unique chance that neither players nor fans should miss. The AIFF has written to FIFA, explaining the reasons for their withdrawal, and hopes to avoid any sanctions from the world governing body.

Additionally, the federation is planning to organize at least two friendlies to offset the sporting impact of their withdrawal from the ASEAN Cup, with teams who participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup being approached for potential fixtures.
