India dominate 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Champs

India has maintained its strong performance in the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, securing 17 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals as the competition progresses. Indian athletes have demonstrated excellence across all three fencing weapons, including epee, sabre and foil, outperforming competitors from Australia, England, Wales, South Africa, and the host nation, Nigeria.

The Indian team has also claimed medals in the newly introduced wheelchair events. Both Indian men and women have reached the podium, while the veteran category still awaits competition. England ranks second on the medal table with 2 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze medals. Nigeria and Cyprus complete the top four positions.

A 17-year-old Nigerian fencer, Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson, achieved a historic feat for his country by winning the first-ever international fencing gold in the men’s U-23 epee event. Top-ranked fencer Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye earned a bronze medal in the men’s sabre, while Nigeria's wheelchair team achieved its best-ever performance, securing two silver and eight bronze medals.

Cyprus, represented by a single athlete, triumphed with a gold medal. Australia's fencers have earned two silver and three bronze medals, South Africa has claimed two silver and one bronze, while Northern Ireland and Wales each secured a bronze. With two days remaining in the championships, India continues to lead the medal table, demonstrating their dominance in the event.
