IG deploys DIG, warns against ballot snatching

The Inspector General of Police has dispatched a Deputy Inspector General to Osun State ahead of the scheduled governorship election on August 15, 2026. This deployment aims to ensure a secure and fair electoral process. According to a statement from the Nigeria Police Force, the Deputy Inspector General will oversee the police's role in election security alongside other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

He will be backed by additional police officers strategically placed across the state's three senatorial districts. These measures are designed to protect voters, electoral materials, polling stations, and media personnel. The police have cautioned against electoral offences such as ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and political violence, warning that perpetrators will face swift arrest and prosecution.

They have also prohibited armed escorts and unauthorised security personnel from accompanying political figures and VIPs during the election. Residents are urged to maintain calm and exercise their voting rights peacefully, while the police reaffirm their commitment to professionalism, neutrality, and respect for human rights throughout the electoral process.
