How this pitcher might help Reds solve Hunter Greene's absence

Cincinnati Reds are nearing the addition of pitcher Brandon Williamson to their pitching staff as they prepare for the end of the season and potential plans for 2027, following the latest elbow surgery of star player Hunter Greene. Williamson, who displayed potential as a long-term starter during his 2023 debut season, is set to have at least one minor-league rehab start with Louisville before the club decides on his return.

The Reds confirmed Williamson's status on the injured list since the end of April due to "shoulder fatigue." During his latest rehab start on August 11, Williamson pitched two scoreless innings and simulated two more, totaling 65 pitches before weather forced the game to be suspended. Reds manager Terry Francona expressed optimism about Williamson's progress, stating, "Now it’s not a game, but he got to 65."

Williamson is expected to make a rehab start on August 16, after which the team will determine his next steps. Greene, who is expected to be out until late next season, is scheduled to undergo surgery in Los Angeles less than an hour before the Reds' game against the White Sox on August 12. The extent of Greene's repair will determine if he will return the following season.

In Greene's absence, Reds have Andrew Abbott, Rhett Lowder, Brady Singer, Chase Burns, and Nick Lodolo in their rotation. Singer, a free agent at the end of the season, remains a potential returnee for next year through a qualifying offer or new multiyear contract.
