Health Minister apologises after disability rights activists protest against his use of expression

Disability rights activists in the city staged a protest against Health Minister K.G. Arunraj's use of a certain expression in Tamil to describe people with disabilities, which they felt had become obsolete. The Minister was delivering a speech at an in-person counselling session for MBBS and BDS admissions, including students from special categories like sports quota, ex-servicemen, and those with disabilities, at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super-Speciality Hospital.

The statement regarding the expression gained traction on social media platforms, prompting the Minister to post an apology on his X account. "Speaking at the event, while referring to students with disabilities, I deeply regret having inadvertently used an expression that should be avoided as per convention," read Arunraj's statement.
