Haze likely to continue for next 3 to 5 days, says MetMalaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing haze across Malaysia is anticipated to persist for the next three to five days, according to the meteorological department, MetMalaysia. Senior director Maqrun Fadzli Fahmi stated that although rain is expected in several regions, it will not substantially improve air quality. From the current data, no significant shift in the situation has been observed; instead, minimal rainfall is expected amidst prevailing dry conditions.

Maqrun expressed hope that the rain would alleviate the haze, but emphasized that even a small amount of rain might not fully eliminate its effects. The haze is particularly severe in the west and south of Sarawak, leading to the closure of over 100 schools in Serian earlier this week and impacting areas in the Klang Valley. The primary cause, Maqrun explained, is the southwest monsoon, which typically occurs between May and September, resulting in drier weather and reduced rainfall.

The lack of rain leads to hotter temperatures, which in turn increases the risk of human-induced fires that produce smoke and haze. Maqrun urged the public to refrain from open burning and limit outdoor activities to mitigate potential health risks associated with poor air quality. As of this afternoon, 10 areas in Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang have recorded unhealthy air quality, including Samarahan, Serian, Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Mukah, Sibu, Johan Setia in Selangor, Cheras in Kuala Lumpur, and Minden in Penang.
