GB teenager Nowacki wins dramatic European gold

British swimmer Filip Nowacki secured a dramatic gold in the men's 200m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. Nowacki, an 18-year-old from the British territory of Jersey, edged out Dutch swimmer Caspar Corbeau with a final time of 2:07.70, marking the first-ever gold for Jersey in this event. Austria's Luka Mladenovic secured third place with a time of 2:08.91, while fellow Briton Gregory Butler finished fifth in 2:09.45.

Nowacki's achievement is particularly notable, as he previously won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month. Meanwhile, in women's events, Lauren Cox and Freya Colbert of Great Britain each claimed bronze medals. Cox won the bronze in the women's 50m backstroke final, with Italian Sara Curtis setting a world record time of 26.56 seconds.

Colbert finished third in the women's 200m freestyle final, with Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic setting a championship record with a time of 1:54.38. France's Florent Manaudou, who won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze at the 2024 Olympics, announced his retirement following the European Aquatics Championships. Manaudou told France TV that he will end his swimming career after this competition.
