Ford believes Toronto island airport will ultimately expand despite federal roadblock

Ontario Premier Doug Ford maintains optimism about expanding Toronto's Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, despite the federal government's rejection of his proposal. Ford is confident his administration will ultimately succeed in expanding the airport, allowing jets to land, bolstering the economy, and offering passengers more convenient travel options with lower fees.

However, the province took over management of the land the airport sits on earlier this year, following a tripartite agreement involving the city of Toronto, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority.

Ford's vision has faced opposition from Prime Minister Mark Carney's government, which rejected the proposal during a consultation in late July. The federal consultation largely opposed the idea of permitting jets to land at the airport. Despite this setback, Ford remains undeterred and is actively seeking further public opinion through additional polling.

The land on which Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is located is governed by a tripartite agreement that was formerly between the city of Toronto, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority. The province assumed control of the city's role in managing the airport earlier this year.
