Finnish hammer thrower Silja Kosonen wins European gold

Finland's Silja Kosonen claimed the European women's hammer throw championship with a remarkable throw of 76.28 meters in Birmingham. This victory marks the nation's inaugural senior championship medal for women's hammer throw. Prior to this triumph, Kosonen's best performances in major championships were fourth place finishes at the 2006 European Championships in Rome and the 2007 World Championships in Tokyo.

Only six Finnish women have achieved the honor of winning a European athletics title, with Kosonen becoming the latest addition to this distinguished list. Previous champions include Riitta Salin in the 400 meters, Nina Holmén in the 3,000 meters, Päivi Alafrantti in the javelin, Sari Essayah in the 10-kilometer race walk, and Wilma Heltelä in the pole vault.

Italian competitor Sara Fantini secured the silver medal with a throw of 74.35 meters, while Norway's Beatrice Nedberge Llano took home the bronze with a throw of 72.88 meters.
