Falcons, Banyana in must-win clash to keep W’Cup hopes alive

The Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana will face off in a crucial play-off on Thursday in order to keep their hopes alive for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The two teams, who are among the most successful women's national teams in Africa, were both eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria was defeated 1-0 by Cameroon, while South Africa, the reigning continental champions, lost to hosts Morocco. Both teams now have the opportunity to secure a spot at the World Cup through the intercontinental play-offs, which will take place between November and February. Nigeria and South Africa have previously met more than 23 times in various international competitions, with Nigeria having a slight edge in their historical encounters.

However, South Africa's recent triumph in the 2022 WAFCON and their win over Nigeria in the 2024 Paris Olympics have narrowed the gap. Nigeria's head coach Justin Madugu emphasized the importance of maintaining a winning mentality and improving continuously. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade urged her team to focus on the upcoming match, directing their energy towards overcoming the recent loss to Cameroon.

Striker Uchenna Kanu shed light on the emotional impact of the quarter-final elimination, mentioning that some players struggled with their emotions and even skipped meals. The match is set to begin at 9pm Nigerian time, with the victor advancing to the FIFA Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament, where three World Cup tickets remain available.
