FAI withdraws Infantino support as IFA backs Uefa

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has officially withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, while the Irish Football Association (IFA) has confirmed its backing of UEFA's stance. UEFA's governing body signed an open letter alongside Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation, accusing Infantino of breaking trust through deception following his attempt to sell a stake in FIFA's commercial operations.

This development has put Infantino's bid for a fourth term at the helm of world football in jeopardy. The Welsh FA was the first home nation to withdraw support for Infantino, followed by the FAI last week. The FAI, which had previously indicated its support, sent a letter to FIFA explaining its decision to rescind its letter of support.

The association expressed gratitude for FIFA's support to Irish football but raised concerns about governance, transparency, and lack of meaningful consultation. The IFA, representing Northern Ireland, noted the wider concerns of football regarding Infantino. While it has not formally withdrawn support, it is backing UEFA's stance, emphasizing its responsibility as a member association of both UEFA and FIFA.

They reiterated their commitment to engaging constructively on issues relating to football governance and will continue to do so through appropriate channels.
