Exclusive: UK Charity Commission gives 'regulatory advice' to synagogue that hosted Great Israeli Real Estate Event

The UK Charity Commission has provided regulatory advice to trustees of the Edgware United Synagogue, which hosted a real estate event promoting properties in illegal Israeli settlements in June. This comes after the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) submitted a formal complaint to Britain's charity regulator, requesting an urgent regulatory compliance case into the synagogue due to the event.

The ICJP argued that the synagogue's use of charitable premises and resources to promote properties in illegal Israeli settlements was in violation of legal, regulatory, and reputational concerns. The Charity Commission responded by providing the trustees with regulatory advice and guidance under section 15(2) of the Charities Act 2011, expecting them to act on this advice in the future.

While the ICJP considers the Commission's response as addressing the serious conduct, they believe the Commission should have taken more robust regulatory actions to uphold charity law and protect public trust.
