Exclusive: UK Charity Commission criticises synagogue for hosting Great Israeli Real Estate Event

The UK Charity Commission has harshly criticized the Edgware United Synagogue for hosting a real estate event that advertised properties in illegal Israeli settlements. This event took place in June at the synagogue in London. The commission is also reviewing its previous decision to close a compliance case concerning the charity.

The commission has expressed concerns about the potential impact on public trust and confidence, as well as the misuse of charity premises. The Charity Commission's spokesperson stated that the charity's trustees were critical for allowing the event to proceed and for not taking sufficient checks and controls. The commission has warned the trustees to address ongoing weaknesses in their governance.

The event was reported to have advertised properties in illegal Israeli settlements, including in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The charity regulator was initially informed about the event on June 15, and a formal complaint was submitted by the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) on the same day. The charity commission has now closed its case into the charity.
