Ex-TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh arrested in connection to hurried cremation of RG Kar rape victim’s body

Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested by the West Bengal Police on August 13, 2026, in connection with the hasty cremation of the body of the 31-year-old female doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The arrest comes after several days of legal proceedings, including a fresh FIR lodged by the victim's father at the Khardah police station on August 9, 2026, alleging the hurried cremation without the family's consent.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was not investigating the case.

According to police officials, Ghosh fled to Odisha after receiving notice of the FIR, hiding at a hotel in Puri and using a new SIM card. However, police tracked his mobile tower location on August 11, 2026, and arrested him from the hotel on August 12, 2026. Ghosh will be brought to Kolkata and presented before the court on August 14, 2026.

The victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, a BJP MLA from Panihati, had moved the Sealdah court on May 13, 2026, seeking Ghosh's arrest along with the local Trinamool Congress councillor, Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, and another party functionary, Somnath Das. They alleged that Ghosh and his associates attempted to cremate the victim's body hastily to prevent a second autopsy. On June 18, a CBI team had visited the crematorium and interrogated Ghosh.
