Eurovision: Winners involved in 'armed conflict' now ineligible to host contest

Bulgaria's coastal city Burgas has been chosen to host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, the organizers have announced. The event is scheduled to take place on May 15, 2027, marking Bulgaria's first time hosting the prestigious music competition after Darina Yotova, known as Dara, won the 2026 contest in Vienna. The semi-finals are set for May 11 and May 13, 2027.

Burgas, the second-largest city on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast with a population of approximately 190,000, will host the contest at Arena Burgas, a venue capable of accommodating up to 15,000 spectators. Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov expressed his excitement, calling it an "honor and privilege" to be selected. The European Broadcasting Union and Bulgarian National Television are enthusiastic about the decision, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on tourism, which currently makes up around 8% of Bulgaria's GDP.

Eurovision, since its inception in 1955, has been a powerful platform for pop music, launching the careers of Swedish icons ABBA and international stars such as Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, and Olivia Newton-John. The 2026 contest drew 131 million viewers, a decrease of 35 million compared to the previous year due to several countries boycotting it over Israel's participation.

Eurovision organizers have also implemented new rules, excluding any country involved in an armed conflict from hosting the event and raising the minimum age of competitors. Bulgaria's win in 2026 was its first since joining Eurovision in 2005, after previously missing three editions due to financial constraints.
