EPL: Tielemans apologises to Villa fans over Man United comments

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans has issued an apology to the club's fans after his remarks comparing Manchester United to a "bigger club" drew criticism. The Belgian player, who recently transferred from Villa to United, had praised his former team for helping him rediscover his best form but later stated: "There are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them."

This comment did not sit well with some Villa supporters, leading to an Instagram statement from Tielemans. According to BBC Sport, he said, "Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I’m grateful for the past three years." Tielemans clarified his intentions, admitting his mistake and promising to be more careful in the future.

He wished the club well in the future. Tielemans spent three years at Villa after joining from Leicester City, contributing with 134 appearances and 10 goals. His apology comes as both clubs prepare for their final pre-season matches before the start of the new Premier League season.
