A dust storm warning was issued for Riverside and San Diego counties, including Coachella Valley in California on August 12. Palm Desert, located in Coachella Valley, was among the areas affected. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that a dust channel was moving northwest near Mecca at 25 mph. Interstate 10 and several other highways in the valley would experience reduced visibility and strong winds.

The NWS warned of dangerous, life-threatening travel conditions due to the dust storms, advising drivers to avoid them if possible. A map of the impacted areas and a video of the storm were shared. Drivers faced near-zero visibility and winds over 40 mph, particularly along I-10. One witness described the storm as a massive, towering dust storm that pushed cars around and reduced visibility to zero for a few seconds. Despite the severity of the storm, it disappeared within a few hours.
