Delhi Secretariat to come up at ITO; Income Tax Office to get new building

The Delhi government has adjusted its plan for constructing a new Secretariat at ITO, with the complex now planned on approximately 10 acres of land, currently occupied by the Income Tax Office and Vikas Bhawan. The Income Tax Office will relocate across the road to the site of the existing PWD building. The government has abandoned its initial plan for a twin-tower complex and opted for a single-tower Secretariat instead.

The area of 10 acres has been identified for the new building, and a request has been sent to the Center. The plan involves demolishing and redeveloping the Income Tax Office, MSO Building, and surrounding areas to create space for the high-tech single tower. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh revealed that the ITO location was chosen after considering several government sites.

The government plans to redevelop a total of 18 acres, with five acres belonging to the Income Tax Office. The current Delhi Secretariat is situated at the Players Building near Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, where the Chief Minister, her Cabinet colleagues, and top bureaucrats are currently located. The old building and scattered offices across the city have prompted the need for a new Secretariat.

The project, conceived years ago, is now entering the preliminary stage, with a global tender to be issued for construction companies to participate.
