Deadly Flesh-Eating Bacterium Linked To 5 Deaths in Louisiana as Coastal Cases Rise

In Louisiana, a deadly bacterium known as Vibrio vulnificus has claimed five lives this year, 2026, according to state health officials. This bacterium, which thrives in warm coastal waters, has been linked to the infections. Health officials have urged residents to take precautions to avoid infection by V. vulnificus. Scientists have previously warned that the range of this bacterium would expand as temperatures rise due to human-induced climate change.

This year, nine cases of V. vulnificus infection have been reported in Louisiana, all linked to exposure to open wounds. Of these patients, five have unfortunately succumbed to the infection. In Florida, two deaths have been reported this year from the same bacterium. Cases are most common in the summer months when warmer ocean temperatures create ideal breeding grounds for the bacteria.
