Dafeamekpor explains why Parliament was recalled

Parliament was recalled by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for a five-day sitting, starting on Monday, August 24, and concluding on Friday, August 28. This decision was made following Order 58(4) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, which grants the Speaker the authority to call Parliament back to session when circumstances demand the House to handle urgent business.

The notice was issued by Speaker Bagbin on Wednesday, August 12. Although the notice did not specify the exact reasons for the recall, Majority Chief Whip Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor explained that Parliament would be Vet the ministers nominated by President John Dramani Mahama after his recent ministerial reshuffle. In an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Thursday, August 13, Mr. Dafeamekpor emphasized that the recall was necessary to allow the House to address the ministerial nominations and other critical parliamentary business prior to the presentation of the national budget.

The five-day sitting will provide Parliament with an opportunity to conduct the necessary vetting and consideration of pending government business before the commencement of the budget process.
