Cork teenager dies during holiday on Greek island

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, 9 August, as a 17-year-old Irish teenager, Alex McKee from Cork, passed away during a holiday in Greece. The unfortunate accident occurred at a residence on the island of Kimolos. Alex, a student at Terence MacSwiney Community College in Knocknaheeney, was set to commence his Sixth Year at the institution.

In January of the previous year, Alex and two other students were honored with prestigious awards, receiving the Ombudsman for Children's award and a Health and Wellbeing Category award at the Stripe Young Scientist competition.

Alex's parents hail from both Irish and Greek backgrounds, and he was reportedly visiting family in Greece at the time of his untimely demise. The news has left the community in Cork devastated, as conveyed by Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony Fitzgerald. Alex was hailed as an extraordinarily bright and young student at Terence MacSwiney, bringing immense pride to the community. He and his fellow students were celebrated for their achievements at the Young Scientist competition, where they secured accolades.

Alex was described as a brilliant ambassador for his school, friends, and family. In expressing his heartfelt condolences, Fitzgerald emphasized the profound impact of this loss. The Department of Foreign Affairs acknowledged the incident and has initiated consular assistance for those affected, while declining to comment on the specific details surrounding the unfortunate event.
