Collector, officials inspect Amirthi Zoo in Vellore

Collector P.S. Leela Alex visited the Amirthi Zoological Park on Thursday to inspect its basic facilities. The visit was part of efforts to enhance the zoo's amenities. District Forest Officer T.K. Ashok Kumar and S. Palani, Tasilder, accompanied her during the inspection.

Ms. Alex and her team checked various aspects of the zoo, such as seating arrangements, the interpretation centre, washrooms, and canteen. "We have requested additional washrooms and drinking water facilities due to the steady rise in visitor footfalls, especially during holidays and festival seasons," M. Murugan, Forest Range Officer of Amirthi Zoo, stated.

The Amirthi Zoo, classified as a mini-zoo since its establishment in 1967, is situated at the foothills of Jawadhu Hills. It spans over 25 hectares and houses 17 enclosures, primarily featuring reptiles and peacocks. The zoo is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except on Tuesdays.

During the inspection, Collector Ms. Alex suggested that the zoo should strive to acquire more forest land to expand its area, which could allow the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to permit the inclusion of more wild species, including carnivores, for educational purposes. Currently, the zoo is home to various animals like spotted deer, crocodiles, white peacocks, and star tortoises.

The zoo's amenities include a spacious lawn, a children's park, and an interpretation centre. On average, the zoo receives 350-400 visitors each day. Three years ago, VOC Park Zoo in Coimbatore donated mugger crocodiles, star tortoises, and rat snakes to Amirthi Zoo, following its closure. Earlier, the zoo received a Sambar Deer and a few pelicans from Vandalur Zoo in 2019.

Visitors have noted that improving access to the zoo, particularly fixing potholed roads and increasing bus services, could enhance the overall experience.
