‘Closer Together’: Celebrating 61 years of friendship, Singapore envoy calls for stronger ties with Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Singapore and Malaysia have forged a strong bond, as evidenced by their 61st National Day Reception held on Wednesday evening, said Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon. The theme, "Closer Together," aptly captures the deep historical ties and growing friendship between the two nations.

Menon emphasized that the relationship is so intertwined that it is in their mutual interest to cooperate on a wide range of issues, especially in today's rapidly changing and volatile world. The High Commissioner highlighted several milestones of their partnership, including high-level visits and exchanges this year, such as President Tharman Shanmugaratnam's State Visit in July and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's visit in February.

People-to-people links have also been strengthened through cultural exchanges, such as the Singapore Ballet's performance at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and the collaboration between Singapore's Ding Yi Music Company and Malaysia's Century Chinese Orchestra. Menon pointed out that the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the forthcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link have brought jobs and opportunities for both peoples and will catalyze regional growth.

He also noted that both countries have provided mutual assistance during times of need, such as during the floods in Hat Yai, Thailand, and the recent repatriation flights from West Asia. Menon concluded by stressing the importance of continuing to work towards a shared future, highlighting the bond between Singaporeans and Malaysians through shared history, kinship, and growing cooperation.
