Bulletproof, bomb-resistant and gas-filtered: Netanyahu’s new $1M armored Audi

In a bid to enhance Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security, Israel has recently acquired eight bulletproof, bomb-resistant, and gas-filtered armored Audi A8 Security limousines, with a cost of at least 3 million shekels per vehicle. The fleet, which includes four for the Prime Minister and two each for the President and Shin Bet, has begun operational service. These new vehicles replace an aging fleet that had been in service since 2018, far exceeding the typical four-year replacement period.

According to the government vehicle administration, the previous limousines suffered significant wear due to the added weight from their armor and heavy maintenance costs. In response, the new models incorporate protection upgrades developed specifically for Israel at the request of Shin Bet, aimed at countering a wider range of modern terror threats.

These enhancements include a filtration system to safeguard passengers from toxic gases in a chemical attack, an integrated communication system, and the ability to seal the vehicle with passengers locked inside. Despite the heavy armor, Audi managed to preserve the limousine's luxury elements, including a refrigerator, specialized wood upholstery, and wood trim.

While the new limousines offer superior protection, they also present a drawback: the reinforced passenger compartment is notably cramped, as confirmed by officials who have had the opportunity to ride in them. The acquisition of these advanced armored vehicles comes after plans to replace the old fleet were discussed as early as 2020, but were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing war.
