Boxer Prichard Colon dies after decade of brain injury during bout

Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has passed away at the age of 33, nearly eleven years after sustaining a severe brain injury during a professional fight. The accident occurred in October 2015 when Colon fought against Terrell Williams in Virginia. The bout was halted in the ninth round, resulting in a disqualification for Colon, but the full extent of his injuries became evident shortly thereafter.

Colon was found collapsed in his dressing room and was immediately transported to the hospital for emergency surgery to alleviate the pressure on his brain. He spent two hundred and twenty-one days in a coma before regaining consciousness. The brain injury left Colon with severe physical and neurological disabilities, rendering him unable to walk or speak.

He required constant care from his family for the following years. His father, Richard Colon, announced his son's death on Facebook, expressing his gratitude to those who had supported and prayed for Colon during his lengthy recovery. He thanked people for their love and prayers, urging them to continue offering their support. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) also mourned the loss of Colon, acknowledging his courage and fighting spirit both inside and outside the ring.

They described his journey as a testament to resilience and the enduring love of his family, noting that he remained a warrior until the very end.
