Body of Pakistani climber recovered from Broad Peak 2 weeks after avalanche killed 10

A team of Pakistani volunteers recovered the body of mountaineer Sohail Sakhi on Thursday, nearly two weeks after an avalanche on Broad Peak killed 10 members of an international expedition, officials announced. Sakhi had been missing since July 30 when the 10-strong group led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja lost contact with base camp.

Authorities reported that all 10 climbers had perished in one of Pakistan's deadliest mountaineering accidents in recent years. Eight bodies, including Sakhi's, were recovered by search teams. Another group of rescuers later assisted in transporting Sakhi's body to base camp where it will be airlifted to a regional air base if weather permits.

The candlelight vigil held in Islamabad two days prior honored the climbers, who came from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, Britain, and the United States. Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 meters (26,414 feet), is the world's 12th-highest mountain and is located in the Karakoram range, close to the world's second-highest peak, K2. Mountaineering accidents are frequent in northern Pakistan, which is home to some of the planet's highest mountains.
