As e-KYC deadline nears, consumers line up at cooking gas agencies

With the deadline for e-KYC completion on domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumers looming on August 16, individuals are flocking to agencies to finalize the process. Some agencies recorded a rush of 60-70 people on a single Thursday. Distributors noted that many consumers had already completed the e-KYC but rushed to the agencies, possibly fearing a possible shift to commercial gas rates.

At least 88% of e-KYC processes have been completed across the state. However, concerns linger among consumers. Surendra Babu, a resident, stated he was occupied with daily tasks, preventing him from completing the e-KYC. He disclosed that his Aadhar card was not linked with his LPG ID, explaining the delay.

Older consumers also faced challenges. A man whose mother had passed away recently recounted the difficulties he faced, including closing her bank account and transferring the LPG connection name. Yet, only recently did he complete the e-KYC.

Despite official assurances that e-KYC is meant to ensure the correct delivery of cylinders to consumers, many remain apprehensive. The Union government heavily subsidizes the product for domestic consumers and cannot allow its funds to be wasted by those who do not require subsidy. Consumer activist T. Sadagopan appealed for the deadline to be extended, arguing that the public is being unduly burdened by the process. He suggested that OMCs should organize special camps for the e-KYC process in public places.
