Android Phones Officially Get iPhone’s NameDrop-Like Tap to Share

Google has unveiled Tap to Share, a Quick Share feature for supported Android phones that enables the exchange of contacts, photos, videos, and other content by simply bringing devices together. This feature mirrors iPhone's NameDrop from three years ago. Initially, Tap to Share will be available on Pixel phones starting with the Pixel 6.

Google plans to extend support to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8, with more Android devices expected to receive the feature by the end of 2026. To share contacts, users merely need to keep their phones on the home screen and bring them close together, allowing for an instant two-way exchange. Users can choose which contact details to share or configure the feature to receive only the other person's information.

Tap to Share also supports photo and video transfers – users select the content they wish to send, open the phone's Share Sheet, and bring the supported devices together to initiate the transfer. The feature can be used for various types of content. Users have the option to turn off Tap to Share by navigating to Settings > Google > Quick Share > Tap to Share within their device's settings.
