Airtel speeds up 5G rollout, installs over 1,000 new sites in one year

Airtel Nigeria has rapidly expanded its 5G network across the country, integrating over 1,000 new 5G sites in the past year. This accelerated rollout, which gained momentum in August 2025, is extending high-speed connectivity to major cities and urban centers throughout Nigeria. Since December 2024 alone, Airtel has installed 759 new 5G sites.

Launched in June 2023, Airtel became one of the first operators to introduce 5G technology to Nigeria's telecommunications market. The company's Chief Technology Officer, Harmanpreet Singh Dhillon, emphasized that the swift network expansion is necessary to meet the growing data demands of consumers and businesses in Nigeria's evolving digital economy.

Dhillon noted that the expansion ensures the network remains agile to support emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, which require faster and more reliable connectivity. For consumers, the enhanced 5G coverage means quicker downloads, improved streaming, smoother video calls, and better performance with data-intensive applications.

Businesses can leverage the increased capacity and lower latency of 5G to enhance digital payments, cloud-based tools, online sales, remote collaboration, and digital marketing. The expansion also benefits education by supporting virtual classrooms, digital learning platforms, and access to advanced educational content. This network expansion is crucial as data consumption in Nigeria has surged, with data usage per customer increasing by 30.8% to 11GB per month and smartphone data usage reaching 13.7GB per customer per month.

Airtel's 5G rollout is positioning the network as a pivotal platform for Nigeria's digital future, connecting everyday smartphone use with the demands of businesses, education, artificial intelligence, and the broader digital economy.
