Adom Trotro: Agbogbloshie yam traders reject proposed 24-hour market structure

Traders at the Agbogbloshie Yam Market have rejected a government proposal to build a 24-hour market structure, claiming the promise of improvements was never the deal. At a press conference, the traders disputed President John Dramani Mahama's promise of gravels and drainage for the market. Instead, they insist the new structure will displace their established trading spots.

Mboranam Solomon, a spokesperson for the traders, revealed that 946 structures are slated for demolition. This uncertainty has taken a toll on the traders' health, with some experiencing severe complications from anxiety and fear. The traders are urging the government to reconsider the 24-hour market plan and instead honor the pre-election commitments to improve the existing market through basic infrastructure.

They stress that upgrading the market would address their concerns without risking their livelihoods. The traders have demanded a more open dialogue with the government and relevant authorities before deciding on the redevelopment. Adom Trotro visited the market today to report on the situation.
