ADC candidate, Adio faults Lagos govt over waste management crisis

The African Democratic Congress candidate for Eti-Osa Constituency II, Ayodele Adio, has expressed disappointment with the Lagos State Government's approach to waste management. Following remarks from the Deputy Governor, Adio questioned the government's inability to predict the volume of refuse required to be managed, despite the city's growth and urban development.

He highlighted that factors like population increase, urban expansion, commercial activity, and changing consumption patterns should have provided ample data for authorities to anticipate rising waste volumes. Adio criticized the government's lack of foresight and planning, asserting that a competent administration should have developed strategies ahead of these realities.

He rejected the comparison to other African cities to justify Lagos' struggles, insisting that the city should set benchmarks for others to follow. Adio described the waste situation as part of a larger governance issue, calling for a comprehensive review of the state's waste management framework. He suggested improvements such as enhanced data collection, modern collection systems, stronger enforcement, and increased investment in recycling and waste-to-energy initiatives.

Adio also proposed the formal integration of informal waste recyclers into a regulated system, believing that their activities could positively contribute to waste management if organized properly. He maintained that Lagos had the financial and human resources to address the issue, but required stronger accountability, innovative policies, and a willingness to reform outdated systems.
