'A service to the world': Norwegian minister praises Pakistan's leadership for US-Iran mediation efforts

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide commended Pakistan's leadership for its role in mediating the US-Iran conflict during a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday. Eide, who is on a two-day visit to Pakistan, highlighted Pakistan's significant contributions to the global community by stating that the country's efforts in facilitating talks between the two warring nations were a "service to the world and, hence, also to us."

He emphasized the importance of international law, particularly in the context of the conflict that began on February 28 with the US-Israel attack on Iran. Eide reiterated Norway's support for Pakistan's role in this "dramatic war" and expressed his appreciation for the country's civilian and military leadership in their mediation efforts.

He also stressed the importance of open sea lanes and the principle of free passage for global trade, as Pakistan's status as a large shipping nation makes it a shared interest for nations worldwide. Eide's visit to Pakistan came after a long absence, with the last Norwegian foreign minister visiting the country being 10 years ago.

During the trip, Eide discussed various regional issues, including the Kashmir conflict and Afghanistan, and mentioned a recent defense pact between Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. He also expressed his intention to strengthen economic ties between the two countries, focusing on trade, investment, education, defense, climate change, IT, and maritime affairs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed Eide's sentiments, emphasizing the mutual value of the relationship between Norway and Pakistan. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, and climate change.
