7th Efunkoya U-15 T’Tennis Championships Serves off Today

The Indoor Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, is set to host the 7th Adegboyega Efunkoya U-15 National Table Tennis Championships. Twenty clubs and 14 states from across Nigeria are participating in the event, each bringing their best young talent. Lagos is leading with the largest contingent, but other states like Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Osun, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, and Taraba are also on the roster.

Notably, last year's champions, Umar Ayoola and Khadijat Musa, are no longer within the age bracket. This year's tournament is all about ambition, as every rally, serve, and smash could elevate a player into national recognition. For many, success extends beyond medals; it's about earning a spot in the national team and proving their talent on a bigger stage.

In addition to competition, the championships celebrate character and discipline, awarding twelve prizes, including Most Improved Player and Best Umpire. Tournament referee John Peters highlighted the tournament's evolving nature, noting that players like Matthew Kuti have already made it to the senior national team. However, the organizers are maintaining strict integrity checks.

Players older than the required limit will be disqualified, and age falsification will result in sanctions. The event aims not just to win but to ensure fairness, discipline, and nurture the future of Nigerian table tennis. As the lights illuminate the hall in Surulere, the atmosphere will be charged with the sound of paddles striking balls, teammates cheering, and dreams hanging in the balance.
