2027: Politicians lobbying university professors ahead election — Ex-INEC REC Igini

Former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mike Igini, has revealed that politicians are already targeting university professors and officials from federal agencies in their efforts to influence the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, Igini pointed out that these politicians are reaching out to academics and using federal agencies that would typically serve as collation and returning officers.

He stressed that the success of elections in Nigeria and the broader African continent relies heavily on the independence and efficiency of electoral management bodies. Igini called for stronger involvement from political parties and the judiciary, describing them as key components of democratic practice. He also advocated for an inquisitorial approach to resolving electoral disputes, moving away from the adversarial methods currently in place.

Igini believes that implementing reforms in these areas is crucial for enhancing democracy and paving the way for a more optimistic political future in Nigeria.
