11 injured, as UK train derails and carriages flip

On Thursday, a passenger train derailed in southern England, resulting in serious injuries for two individuals and minor injuries for nine others, according to the British Transport Police. The Southern Rail train, departing from Victoria station in London and heading towards Eastbourne, was carrying approximately 150 passengers when it left the tracks near the coastal town of Lewes.

Passenger Rob Bradley recounted the harrowing experience, as the train began to rock as it accelerated and his carriage suddenly leapt upwards, with the brakes suddenly engaging. "Everything got thrown forward. My laptop, my AirPods, our bags," he told the BBC. The train skidded for some time before coming to a halt, revealing that the back portion of the train – where they were seated – had been exposed, smoke and dust billowing into the carriage.

Bradley and his six-year-old daughter emerged unharmed, but other passengers were not as fortunate. Bradley observed several individuals with blood on their heads and clothing, indicating they had been cut after a window shattered. One passenger reported seeing another with a head injury.

Aerial footage captured firefighters and paramedics attending to the injured passengers in a field adjacent to the train, with multiple ambulances and three helicopters on standby. All passengers were evacuated within approximately three hours following the incident. UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed her concern over the reports of the derailment on social media, crediting emergency services for their prompt response to the situation. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
