Yung Lean – “Robotboy” (Robyn Cover)

When a pop artist attempts to cover a classic Robyn track, the results can often be disastrous. Malcolm Todd's rendition of "Dancing On My Own" in a Gap commercial, featuring Obsession star Inde Navarrette, serves as a prime example of this unfortunate outcome. The track, while irritating, highlights the potential pitfalls of such endeavors.

To alleviate the unpleasantness, Robyn's fellow Stockholm artist, Yung Lean, has released his own version of "Robotboy," originally featured on Robyn's 2005 self-titled album. The collaboration between the two musicians dates back to their joint appearance on Charli XCX's 360 remix, as well as their performances together on stage in London.

Yung Lean's cover of "Robotboy" was produced by Robyn collaborator Klas Åhlund, who aimed to present a minimalist, droning interpretation of the already restrained original. In an interview with Dazed Digital, Robyn expressed her excitement about Yung Lean's rendition, stating that the song seemed to be created specifically for him.

She described his performance as akin to serenading an older version of himself, whereas her own version evoked a sense of connection with a brother or lover. "Robotboy" by Yung Lean is now available on Young.
