Xavi named first foreign Netherlands coach since 1978

Xavi Hernandez has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, marking the country's first foreign coach in 48 years, according to a statement from the Dutch football association on Wednesday. The Barcelona legend, who captained Spain to victory in the 2010 World Cup, has committed to a four-year contract, guiding the Dutch national team through their Euro 2028 and 2030 World Cup campaigns.

Xavi, 46, expressed his deep connection to Dutch football, stating he feels like a "son of Dutch football" due to his upbringing at the Barcelona academy and influences from legendary coaches like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. He cited Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard as significant mentors who shaped both his playing and coaching careers.

Koeman, the previous Dutch coach, stepped down after their Euro 2022 exit on penalties against Morocco. Arne Slot, the former Liverpool manager, had preliminary talks with the Dutch federation but opted to remain in club football.

Xavi's inaugural match as head coach will be a Euro 2022 qualifying match against Germany at the Amsterdam's Johann Cruyff Arena on September 24. This appointment breaks the Dutch record, as the previous longest-serving foreign coach was Austrian Ernst Happel, who led the team to the 1978 World Cup final.
