Wisconsin primary provided snapshot of Democratic party – can it now win?

Democratic socialist Francesca Hong came close to winning the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Wisconsin on Wednesday, but ultimately fell just short to David Crowley, according to polling data. This result highlights an exciting wave of left-wing victories across the country, challenging the Democratic party's establishment. Crowley, the Milwaukee county executive, secured the win by a few thousand votes, raising questions about the limits of the progressive movement's impact on Democratic contests.

Crowley had previously exited the race in early July but returned late in the month with the support of outgoing Democratic governor Tony Evers. The campaign focused on appealing to undecided voters, who believed Crowley would fare better in the November general election against Republican Tom Tiffany, who had previously voted against certifying the 2020 election results.

The stakes for the governor's race were high, both locally and nationally, as Wisconsin is a crucial part of the presidential electoral map. Democrats aim for a governing trifecta after years of divided government to enact a more expansive agenda. Hong was considered a riskier candidate due to negative headlines about her past, while Crowley was endorsed by outgoing governor Evers, which helped him gain support.

Crowley, 40, became the first Black person to hold the role of Milwaukee county executive ten years ago. His win represents a significant milestone for the progressive movement in a midwestern swing state. Hong, however, lost by a narrow margin, indicating that a Democratic socialist can mount a serious race, even in such a state. The loss should not be seen as a direct rebuke to the progressive movement, but rather a sign of its growing power.
