Why Trump’s plan to sell faster access to Truth Social is controversial

Donald Trump's media company, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), has struck deals with more than 10 customers, mostly high-frequency trading firms, to receive exclusive, ultra-fast access to Truth Social posts. This service, known as Truth API, sells access to publicly available posts from influential Truth Social accounts at a rate of $60,000 to $100,000 per month.

The service, launched on August 1, offers round-the-clock, near-instant access to these posts, potentially giving customers a market advantage by allowing them to react to Trump's messages milliseconds before regular users. While TMTG claims this is a common practice among technology and financial businesses, Democratic Senators have questioned whether this violates securities laws or undermines market integrity, arguing it could put regular investors at a disadvantage.

TMTG maintains that the controversy arises from conflating public and non-public information and questions how access to already-published posts could constitute insider trading.
